The Thrifty Cleaner

Wed 14th May 2008

Steve Leak, from Bristol, has learned how to keep his home all spick and span by buying cleaning materials at dirt-cheap prices.

He’s an expert at all sorts of thrifty cleaning techniques. In total, he reckons he’s saving around £180 a year compared to what it costs the average household.

Some of Steve’s tricks include using cheap cola, instead of bleach, to clean the toilet as it is a fraction of the price.

He uses bicarbonate of soda for unclogging drains, de-scale kettles and to remove tea or coffee stains from china. It costs around 70p for a kilo instead of £4 a litre for a conventional drain unblocker or £2 for lime-scale remover.

Steve also reckons a combination of stardrops, water and white vinegar makes a great multi-purpose cleaner that can be used throughout the home. Mix the three ingredients together and it’s a great alternative to conventional sprays. Just over a litre of Steve’s stuff costs him £1.10 but traditional sprays can cost well over £2.
