Chickens are cheap!

Wed 16th January 2008

Free eggs

Shirley, from Ashby De La Zouch in Leicestershire, loves free range eggs but hates paying the ever-increasing cost of them.

So instead of getting them from the supermarket she buys her own chickens and uses the eggs they lay. And because they lay so many, she often sells any excess to friends for £1 for six.

With the money coming in from selling the eggs that offsets the cost of keeping the chickens which means she effectively gets her eggs for free.

Shirley now has five chickens, which were bought for £4.50 each, and only spends £6 for a sack of pellets to feed them, which lasts for a good few months.
