Joe Venuto, from Leamington Spa, is a powerhouse example of how to use a hidden technique to slash your train costs.

He's saving a whopping £3,300 a year by splitting his tickets instead of buying a standard return journey, after following Martin's tips.

He commutes two to three times a week between his home town and Reading for work. Instead of buying a straight-forward ticket, he gets a return from Leamington Spa to Banbury and another return from Banbury to Reading. This is called split ticketing.

This means he pays £25.10 a time instead of the usual £53 peak-time price - an astonishing, more than 50%, saving.
