Martin's weekly guide to saving you cash

Wed 8th October 2008

Slash broadband costs

If you're after broadband then this could be the deal for you. The current best buy for standalone access, Plusnet, has just launched a promotion with comparison site uSwitch to offer new customers a free wireless router, which usually costs £50, with 12 month contracts.

There's no connection fee, and user feedback's excellent. The only drawback is the 2GB download limit, which won't be enough for fervent downloaders or web TV enthusiasts.

If you need more, o2 offers the cheapest unlimited package at £12.50/month, or £7.50/month for its mobile customers.

Beat the coffee crunch

You can get a free cuppa by grabbing a copy of the Guardian on one of the next three Fridays. In it, you'll find a voucher for a free Starbucks coffee that you’ll have to use that day. A medium latte in Starbucks usually costs at least £2.40 so that's not a bad saving on an 80p paper.

A sight for sore eyes

Tesco's doing free eye tests in-store until Sunday 2 November, which normally cost £10. The best bit is, it's dishing out 100 free Clubcard points when you take up this free test offer, worth £1 instore but £4 if you redeem on goodies from the Tesco Clubcard deals brochure. All you have to do is ring or go along to your nearest Tesco with an opticians, and mention the free eye test offer when booking an appointment.
