Martin’s weekly guide to saving you cash

Wed 19th March 2008

Fly away for just 1p

Ryanair is offering some one-way flights to Europe for just 1p but as you would expect the deal isn’t around for long - it ends tonight.

You can jet off to places such as Cork, Belfast, Stockholm and Turin for this dirt-cheap price. Other destinations include Barcelona, Genoa and Marseille which are going for a tenner one-way.

But watch out for an array of catches – as well as booking tonight, you need to fly in April on a Monday to Thursday, or a Saturday. However, you can’t travel during school holidays and to major sporting events. You’ll also be charged extra for luggage, if you fail to check-in online and if you use anything other than a Visa Electron card to pay.

For full details, including the FlightChecker to find the 1p flights in a matter of seconds, read Martin's Ryanair 1p Flight Finding article.

Let your fingers go mad with virtually free text messaging

A clever new service from Vyke Mobile lets you send texts through your phone’s mobile internet service for a fraction of the normal cost.

Go to the Vyke website via your computer to go through the registration procedure and when it’s done you’ll be able to text as normal from your phone. The software is free and if the person you’re texting also has the software downloaded then texts, themselves, are free.

There may be some internet downloading charges but if you have an unlimited web data tariff then you’ll escape those charges.

If not, you pay it 1p per text, though you get your first 50 texts free. After this you need to top it up with a minimum of £10.

Complete details can be read in Martin's full Free Texts article.

Grab the best life of balance credit card while you still can

As the credit crunch continues to bite Citibank could be about to pull its deal that offers 5.8% interest until a transferred balance is paid off with no fee, provided you shift the debt to it within 90 days of opening the account.

It could go as early as noon tomorrow so if you have a balance to transfer then you’ll need to get your skates on.

If you miss this deal the next best is Barclaycard's Platinum card. With it, you can shift a balance at 6.3% for life with no fee, providing you apply via a comparison site.

Details of the best credit cards to suit your spending are included in Martin's Best Balance Transfers article

Save a packet by buying a packet (of crisps)

If you want to bag half-price theme park tickets, 2 for 1 pub lunches or free National Trust entry, collect points from promotional packs of Walkers crisps.

You get two points for individual crisp bags, and one point for multi-pack crisps. Half price Alton Towers tickets cost 20 points.

You then have to sign up on the Walkers BritTrips website and enter the promotional code to bank the points. And once you’ve got enough points you’ve also enough crisps to stuff yourself on your day out.
