Extraordinary MoneySaving
Teenage Music Scout
Wed 9th April 2008

Simran Bourne, from St Helens, Merseyside, is just 18 years old but is already earning hundreds of pounds as a music scout for website slicethepie.com. He's one of the youngest MoneySavers around and for less than an hour a day in between his college work he reviews tracks from up-and-coming bands and gets paid for his write-ups.
Simran - or Sim to his friends - is a prolific reviewer and goes onto the website every day to review up to 20 tracks. He's already made himself about £450. Joining www.slicethepie.com is free and membership is growing rapidly since it was set up last summer.
The amount of money you can earn is based on your star rating. This goes up according to the number of reviews you write and how accurate they are. But it's not just good news for the reviewers but for the bands that are showcasing their music too. The 20 highest rated artists are shortlisted and the band with the most support gets a minimum prize of £15,000 and gets to release an album.
The website makes its money from advertising and from the record companies that go on to sign the winning band. It then shares out a 'slice of the pie' to its army of reviewers. Sim makes about £10 to £15 a week from his reviews which he fits in around studying for his A-levels. And the shrewd youngster has already put half of it into a savings account and spent the rest on running his car, plus a few nights out in Manchester.
