The Freebie Blagger

Wed 5th March 2008

Elliot Dean, from Maidstone in Kent, is a student with a difference.

Most teenagers who live at home with their parents are used to scrounging off their mum and dad, but Elliot has been blagging and grabbing freebies from shops and online providers for just over a year – and has made himself £700 in the process.

It all started when he needed a new sim card for his phone and asked a phone company for one. It sent it to him for free and he realised that if one company can afford to give stuff away for nothing then most probably can...

So he started looking online for things offered for free and realised it was quite easy to get samples of things for nothing, making him a freebie grabber. This included any promotional stuff like t-shirts, keyrings, gift vouchers and sample kits of beauty products. He also got a mobile phone worth £70 for nothing because it was mistakenly priced at £0.00.

Elliot also learnt to blag his way to a bargain. For example, if he buys a pair of trainers he'll ask, without fail, that the store throws in some socks and laces for free.

By his reckoning, Elliot has saved £200 by getting items he would normally have bought anyway and he’s made another £500 selling unwanted items, giving him an extra £700 in his pocket.
