Geoff Capes

Wed 26th March 2008

Geoff Capes shot to fame in the 1980s as the strongest man in the world. He’s also proven himself as a top athlete and is the most capped British male athlete of all time as a star of the shot-putt.

But how strong is he when it comes to managing his finances?

It turns out that Geoff could do better and he could be at least £1,300 a year better off by following Martin's tips.

He's a saver, but while he's good at keeping his cash to one side, he's also committing a cardinal MoneySaving sin.

The problem is that he's stayed loyal to Barclays for over 50 years so is earning under 4% on his £70,000 of savings when he could be earning 6.5% with the top-paying savings account from Kaupthing Edge.

Geoff could make use of his relationship with Barclays, however, by maximising his tax-free cash ISA allowance and taking out Barclays' Tax Haven ISA which will earn him 6.5% interest in the first year.
In total, he could save £1,000 a year by making the most of his savings.

He could also save another £300 a year by paying off the £2,300 balance he has on his credit card, which he could clear quite easily.
