Colin & Justin

Wed 20th February 2008

Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan are experts at making money from property but are they just as good at looking after their own finances?

The gents first shot to fame in 2003 by hosting BBC2's Million Pound Property Experiment, which saw them buy, renovate and sell seven properties across Britain.

They currently have a hit property series running in Canada called Colin and Justin’s Home Heist, which is due to broadcast in the UK in April on UKTV.

And hopefully by then they would have taken Martin’s advice as between them they could be saving £1,700 a year just by switching credit card and savings provider. Plus they could slash their mobile, broadband, and energy bills even further by being more prudent in their choice of provider.

On their joint credit card, the pair currently spend around £8,000 each month, on average, between them. But their credit card provider doesn't reward them by giving cashback on what they spend.

However, if they both took out an American Express Platinum Moneyback card, they'd be £1,200 better off a year as Amex pays you a percentage of what you spend.

Additionally, they could save even more by maximising their tax free cash ISA limit each year as neither currently have one. By each putting away £3,000 before the end of the current tax year at the start of April, and then £3,600 when the next tax year begins a few days later – as next year’s allowance is higher – they could be £500 a year better off as their current savings account only offers 2.6% interest after tax compared to over 6% tax-free with the top paying cash ISA.
